The files this edition was built from

Everything on this site is derived from the documents below, and there is no reason you should have to take my word for any of it. These are the files themselves, exactly as they came off the archive drive — not re-saved, not cleaned up, not converted. If you want to check a sentence, a figure or a number against what I actually submitted, this is how.

• The manuscript itself ZMAFINALrevised.DOC · 33 MB · in 3 parts The complete 2005 Word original — every chapter, and every figure still embedded in it. This is the file the whole edition was rebuilt from, including the 34 plates that had to be read out of its binary. Word 97 format; most word processors still open it. It is 33 MB and this site's host refuses any file over 25 MiB, so it is split into three pieces that join back into the original exactly. Download all three — part 1 · part 2 · part 3 — put them in one folder, and run: cat ZMAFINALrevised-2005-03-29.doc.part-* > ZMAFINALrevised.DOC On Windows, copy /b part-aa+part-ab+part-ac ZMAFINALrevised.DOC. • The manuscript as plain text ZMAFINALrevised-fulltext.txt · 534 KBThe same document with the formatting gone — useful for searching, quoting or feeding to something else. This is the extraction the site's own text was built and checked against.
• The 1996 Hampshire chapters, as submitted hampshire-1996-originals.zip · 315 KBThe undergraduate thesis files in their April 1996 state, plus the light revisions made in 2005 while assembling the master's. The Fiji and Belize field chapters start here.
• The Fulbright instruments and reports latvia-fieldwork-instruments.zip · 232 KBThe survey in English and in Latvian, the interview protocol in both languages, the code sheet, and the midterm and final Fulbright reports. The two survey files are the ones whose differences the Latvia page discusses at length.
• The abridgement, for comparison abridgement-chapters-6-7-9-2005-05-23.doc · 282 KBThe shorter version prepared so one committee member could review only the decision-science chapters. It is the version that circulated, and it is the lesser document — included so that claim can be checked rather than believed.

Two things are deliberately not here. The 260-respondent survey data is human-subjects material gathered in 2002 under a consent framework that said nothing about publication, so it stays off the web until I have thought properly about that — the charts on the data page are drawn from it, and whether to release the file itself is an open question rather than a settled one. And the Baltic Environmental Forum's Natura 2000 assessment sits in my archive but is somebody else's work to publish.
